First off, working out in a group helps to energize you because human beings are social creatures. Another physical benefit that comes from working out in a group is the fact that you are more likely to show up to a group workout than if you simply have a gym membership and don’t work out with anyone when you do go to the gym. The fact that showing up to the gym and doing your workout is one of the main things in between most people and successfully achieving their fitness goals makes working out in a group a great option for many people. If you are meeting your friends for a workout, your odds of following through and showing up for the group exercise are considerably higher.
Next, let’s take a look at some of the mental benefits of group exercise. One of the great things about working out in a group is being able to feed off of one another’s energy. When you are halfway through a 45 minute workout and you are starting to think about giving up or slowing down, then you can look to your friends around you and get some encouragement to keep you body moving. Metnally, it is also easier to do a workout that is guided by a group trainer in order to take the mental pressure of figuring out what to do each workout off of your place. That way, when you do a workout, you can think as little as possible. Another mental benefit to working out in a group is that you can just listen to the music, turn off your brain, and do what the group trainer tells you to do.
Social benefits of group exercise. When you work out in a group, you always have the option of being social. On the other hand, going to a gym, plugging in your headphones, and doing your own private workout isolates you as a person. You don’t have to talk during a group workout, of course, but if you choose to do so, there is almost always someone nearby who is experiencing the same thoughts and feeling as you are as you heft bigger weights while doing a farmer carry on the last set of a group exercise. Group Exercise Examples:
Let’s take a look now at some of the examples of group exercises. Mainly there are two basic types of group exercise. Strength training and cardio training. There are some group exercises that mix the two. There is always a flexibility factor to be had when doing most group exercises here at Kvell Fitness and Nutrition. Let’s walk through an example of a group exercise that you will find here at Kvell.
Every workout at Kvell begins with a guided foam roller session to address all the muscle groups. Everyone does the same rolling routine. After the group rolling session, everyone stretches in a similar guided routine. The stretching session is also professionally designed to warm up the body.
After that, each group exercise session is different. Every three weeks is broken down into increasing levels of difficulty for every member of our group training sessions. Week one is the easiest level for our group sessions. Week two is slightly more challenging than week one here at Kvell. Week 3 is the most challenging. However, every single one of our group exercises is scalable to be done by clients at any physical capability level. Let’s look at one of our group exercises examples now.
You may begin one workout by doing any of 6 physical movements that have been planned by our professional trainers. In this example of a group workout, the first movement is jumping jacks. After everyone in the group does jumping jacks, they may move on to pull ups. This is just one example of the type of group workout that is done at Kvell on an average day. The important thing to note about the group workout sessions that we have here at Kvell is that each step and movement is scalable to what is physically possible for each person involved in our group exercises. Everyone involved in this example of group exercise would be assigned a certain number that corresponds to the fitness movement that they start with in the example of a group workout session that involves 6 different workout activities.
There is a specific way to adjust a workout movement such as a pull up, and we use that adjustment here at Kvell. A band can be used to assist with the pull up, or there are inverted rows that can be done with a TRX band. We always have at least three different ways to do each step of all of our fitness routines. This has been just one of the examples of group exercise that we do here at Kvell Fitness and Nutrition.
What Are the Other Examples of Group Exercises?
Some group exercise topics include strength training circuits that involve kettlebells, barbells, and battleropes. The fact that you can do strength training in a group and it can help motivate you to push yourself harder is documented. When you workout in a group, you will keep your energy level up in order to work out better with the group. This accounts for the natural motivation that comes along with group exercise, as opposed to only pushing yourself while you are working out alone with any basic gym membership. Here at Kvell, we push ourselves the hardest on week 3, because of how our workouts are designed. It is much easier for our clients to push themselves while they are working out in a group when it comes to our strength training on week 3 workout sessions.
Most of the time, week one is “bring a friend week at Kvell” where every client can bring a friend with them to do their workout for free. This way, the community is built by adding anyone else who wants to be happy and proud about their workout. That is just one way that we prioritize community connection locally here in Boise at Kvell. There are other benefits of group exercise for older adults when it comes to how we craft our group workout sessions here at Kvell. One of the main benefits of how we build our group workouts is that we scale every single movement so that anyone can do it. For example, a push up is an easily scalable movement. There is the basic push up, for example, but then on the harder end of the spectrum is the one handed handstand push up. Not everyone can do one of those moments, of course. So, there is the other end of the spectrum when it comes to the styles and forms of a basic push up, and that is simply placing your hands on the wall and pushing yourself forward and back. That is just one example of how we scale each movement of all of our group exercises here at Kvell in order to make sure that each group exercise activity is accessible for all of our members, no matter where they are at in their fitness journey.
What Do You Do In a Group Exercise?
There are a lot of great examples of what a group exercise looks like here at Kvell, but let’s look at a specific example of one of our group workouts right now. First, there is group foam rolling to address the massage needs of each of the muscle groups. After that, everyone participates in a warm up that includes working with a band to help increase flexibility and stretch the muscle groups.
The main workout would then be composed of 4 basic workout movements that are each scalable in order to be accessible for all fitness levels. In this example, workout movement one would be sit ups, the second would be push ups, the third would be pull ups, and the fourth would be kettlebell swings. This is just one basic example of the types of group exercises that we host here at Kvell. Each and every session is planned by a professional trainer, and is always designed with the entire workout program as a whole in mind. This is because the human body responds to the same activity over and over by adapting to it. So in order to be fit for life, your group workout routines need to constantly change.
